Our painting shows in a brisk brushstroke a typical Monticelli composition on a densely grained wooden panel. Especially the park-like setting with the central "Gallant Scene", probably inspired by Watteau, can be considered a distinguishing mark of the well-known pre-impressionist. In 1855 Monticelli met Narcisso Virgilio Díaz de la Peña and painted with him in the forest of Fontainebleau. Between 1878 and 1884 Monticelli, who was born in Marseille although his parents were probably of Italian origin, painted together with Paul Cézanne. Monticelli also had a decisive influence on Van Gogh's work.

Unser Gemälde zeigt in flottem Pinselduktus eine Komposition, wie sie typisch ist für Monticelli, nämlich auf einer dicht gemaserten Holzplatte. Besonders die parkähnliche Kulisse mit seiner zentralen „Galanten Szene“, bei der er sich von Watteau hat inspirieren lassen, kann als Merkmal des bekannten Vorimpressionisten gelten. 1855 lernte Monticelli Narcisso Virgilio Díaz de la Peña kennen und malte mit ihm im Wald von Fontainebleau. Zwischen 1878 und 1884 malte Monticelli, der in Marseille geboren wurde wenngleich seine Eltern vermutlich italienischer Herkunft waren, gemeinsam mit Paul Cézanne. Monticelli beeinflusste auch Van Gogh maßgeblich in dessen Schaffen.
