River Landscape with Merchants and Horses

Signed and dated on the package resting on the body of the recumbent horse: Siberechts 1685.
This remarkable painting originates from the renowned collection of Sir Rupert Hardy, from which a watercolor by Joseph Mallord William Turner is also held in the British Museum (1958,0712.414). From an elevated viewpoint, the viewer overlooks a wooded hill that serves as the setting for a loading scene in the foreground. Several merchants pause with their horses to load a heavy burden. Two figures descend the hill toward a group of houses, beyond which a vast, hilly landscape unfolds with a river winding into the distance. Elements of this painting recur in other works by Siberechts, such as the tied package in a landscape sold at Christie’s in New York in 1998, or the river landscape with repoussoir tree from 1698, now in the River & Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames since 2001.

Auf dem Paket, das auf dem Körper des liegenden Pferdes liegt signiert und datiert: Siberechts 1685.
Aus der bekannten Sammlung des Sir Rupert Hardy, aus der etwa auch ein Aquarell von Joseph Mallord William Turner im British Museum (1958,0712.414) zu finden ist, stammt dieses außergewöhnliche Gemälde. Von erhöhtem Standpunkt blickt der Betrachter auf eine baumbestandene Anhöhe, die im Vordergrund als Schauplatz für eine Verladesituation dient. Mehrere Händler pausieren mit ihren Pferden, um eine schwere Last zu verladen. Die Anhöhe gehen zwei Personen in Richtung einer Häusergruppe herab, hinter der sich eine weite hügelige Landschaft mit sich in die Ferne windendem Fluss erschließt. Elemente dieses Gemäldes finden sich auch in anderen Werken Siberechts wieder. So etwa das geschnürte Paket in einer Landschaft die 1998 bei Christie’s in New York verkauft wurde, oder auch die Flusslandschaft mit Repoussoirbaum von 1698, die seit 2001 im River & Rowing Museum in Henley-on-Thames verwahrt wird.
